Choosing Commercial Trash and Recycling Containers

A trash can is simple until it is too small for the break room, too heavy to empty or the wrong lid for the hallway. Plan by location.

Different spaces generate different waste. Desks produce light paper. Break rooms produce wet, heavy food waste. Restrooms produce paper towels. Loading docks produce cardboard and packaging film. Before choosing products, list each location and the volume and type of waste it produces between collections.

A container should hold one collection interval of waste without overflowing, but it should not be so large that a full bag becomes too heavy to lift safely. Smaller containers in more places can be better than one large container far away. For heavy wet waste, a mid-size container emptied more often is usually easier on staff than an oversized one.

Choose the opening to suit how people use the space.

Open top containers are fastest to use and empty, suitable for back-of-house areas.

Swing and dome lids hide contents in public areas while keeping hands off the lid.

Step-on containers suit restrooms and food areas where hands-free use helps.

Slim and wall-hugging profiles fit narrow corridors and under counters.

Wheeled containers help when full loads must travel to a dumpster.

Recycling works when it is obvious. Place recycling containers next to trash, not across the room, and use consistent colors, lids or labels for each stream. Keep the streams to what your hauler actually accepts. Prepaid recycling kits are available for specific items that should not go in general waste.

Plastic containers are light, quiet and easy to clean, and they suit most indoor uses. Metal containers resist damage and heat and often look better in lobbies and public spaces, but they dent and can be heavier to move. Some containers combine a decorative outer shell with a removable inner liner that is easier to lift and wash. Consider who cleans the container and how often, not just how it looks on day one.

Outdoors, weight and stability matter more. Wind, weather and sunlight all work against light containers, so check that an outdoor model is designed for exterior use before ordering.

Many containers are sold without lids, dollies or liners, and replacement lids are sold separately. Read the product page carefully so you know what arrives in the box. Biz Supply lists containers, bags and accessories under Trash and Recycling Containers and Trash Bags, with product type filters to separate actual containers from lids and parts.

Large containers are bulky for their weight. Shipping is calculated automatically at checkout from your delivery address, and the total appears before payment. If a container ships by freight, review the receiving guide so you know what to check at delivery.

Keep containers out of walkways and away from doors where they can block an exit, and do not place them where they obstruct fire equipment. Containers near heat sources or smoking areas need fire-safe designs, and cigarette receptacles belong outside building entrances according to local rules. In restrooms and food areas, choose surfaces that can be cleaned easily and lids that keep odors in.

Think about the person emptying the container. A full bag should lift out without pulling the container over, and the walk to the dumpster should not require carrying a heavy bag a long distance. Venting channels in some containers make bag removal easier by preventing a vacuum as the bag is lifted.

Using a small number of container models across a building means fewer liner sizes, fewer replacement lids and simpler training. Pick a standard for desks, a standard for common areas and a standard for heavy areas, and buy new containers to match as old ones are replaced.

Map each location with its waste type and collection frequency.

Shortlist containers by capacity and lid style, then confirm what is included.

Order matching liners from the trash bag guide sizes.
